Red wire at ceiling box

I moved into a new house and want to wire a chandelier. The ceiling box has three wires, red, black and white, and there is a dimmer switch on the wall. I didn't use the red wire and wired the fixture only to the black and white wires. When I tripped the circuit breaker, the lights came on at full brightness, and the dimmer is not working. How do I connect the red wire so that the dimmer works? (note: the voltage at the red wire goes from zero to 115 volts as the dimmer switch is moved to max)

Try wiring the ribbed wire from the chandelier to the white wire and the non ribbed wire to the red wire and see how it goes.

Let us know if this works or not. If not we will try to help further.

Yeah, sounds like the red wire runs through the dimmer, but the black wire is probably unswitched. What do you see if you take apart the box where the dimmer is?

Remove the fixture wire from the black and connect it tothe red wire. Put a cap on the black wire. Leave the two white wires connected together.
