Leaving bulbs out or loose in exterior christmas lights

Is it ok to leave a bulb loose or remove a bulb when hanging outdoor christmas lights?

I have areas where I don't want a portion of the strand to light and have either removed or loosened the bulb. I was thinking that removal is safer than a loose bulb. They are the C7 colored bulbs.

Thanks.

You will probably be fine if you leave them in but loosened. If you leave them out, you have a chance of shorting them out, but that is unlikely as well.

Save your dead bulbs and use them in the sockets. I would leave them out as opposed to loose. Wouldn't one to make partial contact and start arcing.
