removing recessed flourescent box

I am trying to figure out how we could removed a large flourescent light that is recessed. It is extremely dated and ugly and we want to replace it with a normal light. But, obviously, there is going to be a gigantic hole in the ceiling if we remove it. Does anyone have any suggestions on what we can do to get a new, more modern light in our bathroom?

Like Wirepuller said, pull the light, repair the ceiling and install a surface mount light.

Why not install one or two round recessed lights in the old ones place. Then just patch and paint. Maybe a fan/light while the ceiling is open and get it ducted out. Or, install a regular octagonal box, patch and paint, and then a regular surface fixture. With a big hole in the ceiling the selections are great.
