ceiling fan speed control problem

I have a hunter ceiling fan that has the normal two pull cord mechanism. The pull cord for the fan speed does not work properly. It sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. I have to keep pulling it multiple times until I finally get it to operate correctly. Can I replace the pull cord switch on the fan? If so, how is it done?

Yes, the switch is held in the bell with the hand screw nut you see on the outside. After you turn off the power to the fan at the circuit breaker panel, open up the bell and unscrew the switch. It will several wires coming from it. Make note of them and their colors. Cut them about an inch from the switch and take the switch to the hardware or big box store and buy one just like it, as well as some orange wire nuts. Strip back the wires in the fan bell and attach them to the corresponding wires coming from the switch. Replace the switch in the bell with the nut and put the bell back up.
