Formula for wattage of additional fixture

Our livingroom is poorly lit because there is no overhead lighting. I want to add a ceiling fixture to the center of the room. Is there a formula or some way to get the correct fixture wattage?

thanks.

The fixture wattage is merely the sum of the bulb wattages. So, for example, a fixture that takes two 60-watt bulbs is a 120-watt fixture.

Is that the question you asked? Or are you asking how many watt fixture you should buy?

Your living room is not poorly lit because there is no overhead lighting. Your living room is poorly lit because there is not enough light there. Adding overhead lighting is one way to increase the light. Adding floor and table lamps is another way.

The correct wattage for what? Reading? Reading in every possible location of the room? General activities? , such as sitting and watching television or talking?

How high is the ceiling? What color are the walls? What type of lighting do you like? How many lights?

I suggest you take all the information to a lighting store and ask them. I do not mean a big box store, I mean a lighting store.

You can discuss with them what your needs are. They will ask the appropriate questions and can then steer you in the right direction.
