Question HELP: Removing Florescent light fixtures and installing ceiling fan

Hello,

I have a house that was built in the 60's and the kitchen has 2 florescent light fixtures. We recently removed the drop down ceiling with the metal tracking. What is the best way to remove the florescent fixtures and install a ceiling fan? How much of the ceiling will need to be spackeled and mudded? Should I just pay someone to do it or is it doable?

Obviously this is 'doable'. Can you do it? No idea how handy you are or whether you want to do this.

However, we cannot possibly speculate on what is involved since you have not provided any details.

Are the wires for the existing lights in the main ceiling? How do the wires come down to the fluorescent lights?

Where in the ceiling, in relation to the existing wiring, do you want to ut the ceiling fan?

Does the existing wiring include a ground? (Doubtful)

Will the ceiling fan include a light? If so, do you need to control the fan and light separately (with separate switches)?

Does power run to the switch first and then to the lights?

Fan

The fan will need to be installed using a fan-rated ceiling box well secured to the ceiling joists.

This is a very common project for homeowners with attic access above the ceiling. Without attic access, it is much more difficult. If you have attic access, go for it. Without, only do it if everybody on the block comes to you for remodeling advice.
