Red face blew something

I replaced a two bulb ceiling fixture with a single bulb one. It was simple enough, attach black to black and white to white, however when I switched the wall switch off, nothing happened. Well, then things got interesting, I apparently thinking I knew what I was doing, put a black wire with a white, after that, I have no power to half the kitchen and the garage (which is attached). And yes I had turned the power off at the box. I had checked to circuits and they are not tripped. How do I get power back in these two areas?

The answer is easy. Implementing it may not be.

Attach the new fixture in the same way the old one was.

In the future, make not of how the old fixture is installed.

If you tell us ALL the cables and all the wires at the ceiling and at the wall switch and how ALL those wires are attached to anything then we can probably sort it out.
