new light fixture won't screw into box/housing

We got a new light fixture, wiring was a snap. The problem is the fixture's screw hole areas won't match up with the circle housing 2 screw holes in the ceiling housing. We tried to make it work, but it seems that we will have to either drill the metal fixture back or maybe try to rip out the old housing and get a new, but that sounds like a big job. Any quick ideas to make this a completed project? Thanks.

Are you using an adapter plate on the ceiling box? They are usually round and have slots. Didn't the light come with an adapter? Often this will be just a flat bar specifically made for the light with holes for 3" and 4" box and holes for the light.

You need a rectangular adapter. I do not know the official name for the item. It will screw into the box, and the light fixture will attach to the adapter.

Thumbs down adapter, thanks

The lights didn't come with the adapter. I will head up to the store tomorrow to pick that up. Thanks...that is probably what we need.

Looks like you are in an older home situation with 3" ceiling boxes. The adapter plate will allow for easier installation.
