ceiling fan brace for <16" between joists
I'm trying to install an expandable fan brace but I discovered that the space between the joists I'm working with is roughly 12" - about one inch shorter than the fan brace in its fully collapsed state. So it just won't fit, much less expand. All the expandable braces I was looking at seemed to be for joists spaced 16-24" apart.
I don't have access from above. Do I have any options that don't involve ripping out a big chunk of my ceiling?
Thanks!

Install a 2x4 piece of 2x4 between the joists. Hang a box from the 2x4. Screw the box directly into the 2x4. Depending on the exact circumstances, you MAY be able to insert the piece of 2x4 and attach it from the hole in the ceiling you have created.
