Hole in ceiling too big for fan mounting plate

I removed an existing light fixture to attempt a ceiling fan install. It looks like the hole that's around the existing wire box is too wide - There isn't a place where the 4 rubber feet of the mounting plate will connect with the ceiling. How can this be reinforced so that I can do a proper install?

Here is a picture of the hole in question

I don't understand the question. If some of the hole will be visible, patch the hole.

sorry if I wasn't clear enough. Its not an issue of the hole being visible after the fan installation - I just can't install the ceiling mount so that the rubber feet(for noise, I guess) will be completely flush with the ceiling. The rubber feet lign up with the 'crumbled' part of the hole around the outlet box. Hopefully that's a little more clear.

I still don't understand the problem. Patch the hole. Then the ceiling will be flush with the box.

Will simply patching the hole provide enough stability for the fan's mounting bracket?

The fan mounts to the box. Assuming a fan rated box is installed, and installed properly, you will have no problem.
