do I have the correct voltage?

I'm replacing a vanity light over my sink becaues the old started tripping the breaker. When I removed the old one, the wiring has type NM 14-2 with ground and says 600 v.
does this mean 600 volts was running through this light or is that just the insulation rating? Help!

It is the insulation rating. That is the maximum voltage you are permitted use that cable for.

Since that cable is only marked as NM and not NM-B you must make sure you use a fixture that does not require 90ºC wire. NM cable is only rated 60ºC.

Try to figure out why the breaker was tripping. If you don't solve that mystery, it may still be tripping with a new fixture. Is the insulation on the wiring in good shape? Or is it brittle?

Breaker tripping

There is always a possibility that the breaker has tripped several times and is now worn out. They do get old and weak after a while.
