Simple Fluorescent Light Question

We have many tubed fluorescents(48"L, T8 & T12)
in our basement. Is it true that more energy is
being used every time we turn the lights on rather
than just leaving them on? That's all. Thank You!

There is a slight surge to excite the ballasts, but no where near what you would experience if you left them on all the time. Obviously if you turned them off, you would be using no electricity at all. Turn them off.

Ok good, becuase it would be strange if the lights were on for no reason when no one is in the space. Hence why they tell you to turn lights off when you leave a room.
