Question tapping into existing wire

Hi,
We are installing two pendant lights controlled by a switch. We have tapped into an existing ceiling wire which is 12-2. This wire is for the existing 2 ceiling fans. How do we wire the lights so that the electricity runs from the power source (the tapped into line) to the switch then to the two pendant lights. We tried connecting blacks to blacks and whites to whites, but that only allows the pendant lights and the first ceiling fan to work. The other ceiling fan doesn't now.
Thank you.

You can't just tap inot any cable. You need to be sure it is not a switch loop.
If the wire is not a switch loop the.
Connect the two cut ends black and the white to the switch together.
Connect the two cut ends white and the white to the new fixtures together.
Connect the switch black to the fixture black.
Connect all the grounds together

At the switch
Connect the white and balck to the switch terminals.

At the fixtures match all the colours.
Blacks together.
Whites together
