Lighting of steps/stairs

Lighting of steps/stairs
I have straight stairs in my house and thought it would be neat to put some type of lighting that would like the steps themselves rather than the stairwell. I'm thinking something like movie theaters that have a small lamp facing down on the steps and a metal cover protecting the top half of the bulb.
I would like this to be run off of 110Volts to make it a simple light switch, ie no transformer like for halogens.
My initial search revealed the exact thing I was thinking of, but costs $110 for each light. I was hoping to do something for maybe $10-20 per light, and probably 5-6 lights total, maybe 1 every other step.
I don't want a rope light, but I am open to suggestions. Anyone have any ideas?

You really do not have much of an option if you don't want to go with anything using a transformer or rope light. The problem with the step lights as you mentioned is that they do cost a significant amount of money. I personally was shocked when I found out the cost of one step light. I had a customer several weeks back that bought some of these step lights and just the rough in can costed him around $83.00. In addition to the rough in can there has to be a trim; and as with recessed lighting there is always a wide varaity of trims available.
To keep costs down have you thought about lights every 3rd or 4th step? Also how many lights are you planning on having? Also what is the number of steps in the stairway?
Here is a Juno Lighting outdoor rated step light, with a compact florescent lamp. http://www.junolightinggroup.com/pro...d=2018&brand=1

You may want to look at the NSL website. I don't remember the address but the catalog had some neat stuff.

Found some lights, new question
I just found these, http://www.swego.com/mall/elipse_8895.asp
They are inexpensive, but unfortunately look it too.
I was thinking maybe I could make something using a standard 110V bulb, but finding a plain small fixture might take a little looking. Any idea on where to find some fixtures for small bulbs that just hold the bulbs and have no external features other than wires?
Thanks.

Step lighting
That nslusa.com link has some promise. I guess I have to call to check prices. The look is right and the led lights are great for this application.
Thanks a bunch!
