need help with wires-3 white and 3 black coming from ceiling
Hi,
I am trying to hook up a new ceiling fan. the fan only has 1 white and 1 black wire to hook up, plus the ground. All of the lighting wires are attatched to the fan part. But I have 3 white wires and 3 black wires coming from the ceiling. There is a switch on both sides of the room that can turn it on and off. I tried hooking all the white wires and all the black wires together but it did not work. Any advice would be appreciated.

First, make sure you have the circuit breaker turned off.
Second, a couple good books on wiring would be good for you to read.
Third, where were all these wires originally? Sounds like they're all loose now, but they can't have been that way when you started.

Most likely one of those black/white pairs is a switch loop. As Mitch said, the clues you need to solve this are in how it was previously connected and what it was previously connected to. If you don't have these clues, then you can still figure it out but it will take more work.
