light bulb extenders

can anyone help me with this issue? When installing a lamp extender for a light bulb in a 3-way lamp, why do you lose the 3-way operation. for example: you have a 50/100/150, then you install a light extender and you have 0/100/100. Its just boggling my mind.

A 3 way bulb has two contact areas to the socket which allow the switch to alternate between the two contacts or both at once to produce different light levels with the two filaments in the bulb.the extender eliminates one of the contact points between the bulb and the socket turning the bulb back to one way with one filament activated (the center point).

As far as I know there is no extension that will function with a 3 way bulb.

Maybe what I meant to say was socket extender. Thank you for the info.

My primary reason for this question was changing from a standard 3-way bulb to a 3-way compact fluorescent bulb, in a lamp that the fluorescent bulb will not fit. I guess I will keep looking for extensions or create my own.lol.
