Put in New Chandelier Lights is On Light Switch Wont turn it Off

Ok so I tried to put in a new light switch and I finally got it to work. When I flipped the breaker something but the light switch popped. I replaced the switch but the light is permanently on unless I turn the breaker off any Ideas. My husband is gong to kill me because he said I should touch anything. My surprise has gone very wrong.

Oh yeah house is about 100 years old rewired in the 70's

Welcome to the forums.

Is this a three way switch(ability to off on one switch and on with another)? How many bulbs in the light? If a single pole switch(on and off from same switch) the black wire should be hot(110v) to one side of the switch and the other side of the switch should go to the light(hot when turned on). Check with a meter at the switch with it off and see if both sides are hot. The switch may have created a short across itself causing it to be on all the time. More info.? Good luck!
