Help! Ceiling fan noise at low speeds and startup.

Hi,

I have a 5 year old Casa Blanca fan that has recently started making noises. It sounds like a clipping noise coming from the fan. It only seems to happen at startup and low speeds. If I change the fan speed from low to medium and then to high, the noise is minimal, if even at all. The fan appears to be balanced with no wobble.

Any ideas?

If it is a hugger, pull the cover down, if possible and make sure you don't have a wire nut, where you capped the wires, touching the motor itself. This is the biggest, fixable noise maker I have run into, but it happens often.

ceiling fan brace old work

I ran electrical line and was preparing to add a havey duty ceiling fan brace when I realized the brace's spikes do not hit my ceiling joists. I have a 24" gap between joists in a first floor room. (no attic access) Do I need to rip open my ceiling to add 2X4 frame work to make the brace I have work, or can I buy another brace somewhere that will allow the spikes to hit my joists? The bottom of the joist is only about 1 1/2" and the spikes on the brace I have just barely hit the top of it, which winds up pushing the brace too high. :mad:

How do photocells start to fail?

I have a couple of lamps on my garage that have a on/off switch by the front door, and also are wired through a photocell. The photocell is mounted in a box about knee high on an exterior wall of the garage. The location of the photocell is not great due to landscape veg and the fact that the wall it's on does not get much light until late morning or early afternoon. The lamps stay on much later that I'd like, especially this time of year. Could I just need a new photocell? I don't remember this being an issue until recently. :confused:
