I have a number of ceiling fixtures from IKEA, but most of them won't fit the ceiling boxes inside my apartment. I have never had a problem in any other of the places I have lived and all of the sudden I moved here and these brackets are much too large for the box. Is this typical or has anyone else encountered this issue before? As you can see in the picture, I can double up the threaded screws on the same side of bracket, but it's very unstable, especially for the larger and heavier fixtures. It also puts a lot of stress on the threads and I have stripped some of them. Also the electrical wiring is very strange with black, white, and red wires... I have no idea what the red ones are, but I don't use them. Is there is a solution for this problem short of removing chunks of dry wall and replacing the ceiling box?

I have hung a few IKEA lights an found them not very well made in terms of ease of installing. What you need to do is get it so the bracket is centered on the box.
Since it looks like it is a special bracket, and none of the holes line up, my best suggestion to you is to drill 2 holes a bit larger (3/16" - 1/4") than your screws in the solid part of the bracket. Then get some washers so the head of the screw does not go through the hole and attach the bracket nicely centered on the box.
