running wires for recessed

I am wondering what the best/easiest/most effecient way of running the wires for a recessed install would be. I would have to go through 4, maybe 5, joists. Does anybody have any experience with those long flexible drill bits and if so, do they work well? Or would I be better off taking a channel out of the ceiling and patching it when I'm done? I consider myself pretty handy, so patching a few holes isn't a problem. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

I find it easiest to just cut a channel in the sheetrock 4-6" wide and long enough to get to all the joist spaces you need. Then drill your holes in framing as needed.

The long flex bits can work. You risk hitting any wires or pipes that may be in the way between the two endpoints.

I almost drilled through the floor above when the bit went high. Only saw it when I got to the other end.
