Ceiling fan won't turn off with new switch

I have a common problem with a twist. I replaced a broken 4 wire switch that controls only the fan portion of my ceiling fan. I made sure all wires went back in the same slots they came out. Now the new pull chain will change speeds, but will not turn the fan off. (There is no wall switch for this fan either) It seems there is a "dead" location in the switch.
Ex: Starting on slow speed
Pull 1- High speed
Pull 2- No change
Pull 3- No Change
Pull 4- No Change
Pull 5- Back to slow

What could be the problem???

Thanks

Sounds like the wires are not in the correct locations. Not all switches are the same internally.

Thanks but if thats the case then why does everyone stress putting the wires back in the same spot if I'm going to have to figure it out through trial and error anyway? Home depot only had one type of switch, so that doesn't seem right. Well summer's coming so maybe I'll leave the fan on permanently
