Ceiling has 2 wires, ceiling fan/light has 3

Hi all,

I live in an older bungalow, I'd say 40+ years and want to install a couple of ceiling fans with light.

I removed the original light from the ceiling and it only has 2 wires. A black one and a white one. The current light switch (on the wall) is a single switch wiring. The ceiling fans have an extra green one. What do I do?

Many thanks!

Nathalie

The green is the ground. If your system is ungrounded you do not connect it. Do you have non metallic cable such as Romex, or metallic cable such as Bx or conduit. Is it a metal box. Also is this a fan rated box?
