Exterior Motion Light Fixture

Hi,
I need to install an exterior motion-sensor light fixture on the siding outside of our garage. The junction box is inside the siding wall and the old wires from the old fixture are coming out through small holes that were drilled through the siding. The new light fixture has a bracket to attach to a junction box. Do we need to cut a hole in the siding to access the junction box to install the fixture, or is there another way we can install the light?

Your octagon box needs to be installed in a 4" hole so that the edges of the box are flush with the siding. What you now have is sometimes referred to as the "Jackleg Electrician" method of installing a light and is a fire hazard, not to mention a code violation.
