Hello,
I would love a suggestion on which would make a better location to wire and mount side wall sconces for a master bath vanity...7 1/2" or 10 1/2" away from wall with mirror?
Vanity Description:
- 60" wide x approx. 22.5" deep
- double sinks
- one framed mirror behind sinks
- one light fixture centered over mirror with either 4 or 5 lights
- two wall sconces on the walls adjacent to the wall with mirror.
- wall sconces will be mounted approx. 66" above the finished floor
The sconces can be mounted on either side of double studs which will make it either 7 1/2" away from the wall with the mirror, or about 10 1/2" away. Which location is best?
Thanks for your help. we are wiring the sconces in the next few days

Welcome to the forums! Sconce lights are OK, but they throw some weird light on your face, and the light is always "in" your face when you are trying to brush your teeth, etc. I would opt for the wide stance. You're gonna have a lot of light in that bathroom! Are you sure you need that much? Just curious.

The advantage to sconces is that both sides of your face get light evenly. For example a recessed above the mirror leaves shadows below the brow and chin lines.
Normally I would try to position the lights to see what looks better. Sometimes it is just a matter of getting the scale correct between the fixture and the blank space.

Ops! I remeasured and realized that the sconces can either be about 6 - 6 1/2" or 14 1/2" (on center) away from the vanity wall with the mirror.
I am trying to achieve balanced lighting around the vanity mirror so I hope I am not going overboard by using two side sconces and a vanity light mounted on the all above the mirror.
I fear that 6 1/2" too close to the mirror and am leaning towards mounting the sconces 14 1/2" away from the mirror.
the fixtures haven't been puchased yet, but maybe I should do that soon in order to play with the positioning to see which location is better. I was curious if there were suggestions here first. i am new to all of this so any advice is appreciated!! Thank you!

I am not sure why you only have those two mounting distance options. You can buy fixture boxes that are on spreader bars that will allow the fixture to fit anywhere between the studs. You could also install wood blocking to get the box where you want it.
Look at page 80 of this PDF.

yep, you're right I'm sure there are plenty of more options and am just wondering what is the best distance away from a mirror to mount a sconce on the side wall. I mentioned the two locations that are on opposite sides of double studs that I am working around.
thanks!
thanks!
