Hole size for 8 gauge wire.

I'm running an 8-gauge wire in my basement (long story short), and I need to know what the minimium code requirement is for the size of the hole I should drill thru the floor joists to run the wire.

B/c of the size of the whole, is it even code/allowed to run it thru the floor joists? Is it (not) recommended?

A 3/4" hole would be sufficient. Code requires you to use a fire barrier caulk when transversing floor to floor. Joist to joist make your hole in the center and not on the bottom 1/3 of the joist. If you have TJI I-Joists, there are knockouts which will allow you to run the cable.
