Kitchen counter recessed light - how far out?

Is there a general rule of thumb how far out "depth-wise" to place recessed lights above the kitchen counter?

My kitchen counter will be 24" deep.

Should the lights be further out than 24", may be 32" where it would be most likely directly overhead? or should it be less than 24" where it will be directly above the counter? or right at the edge (24")?

How big are the can's? I'm no expert, but I had the same questions when doing my own kitchen a few years ago. I put the smaller cans 3" or 4" -centered over the work area of the counter tops. They were out 16 inches from the wall. Obviously, if they are for general light of the room and not worklight for the counters you would bring them out farther.
