Tracing shorts in outdoor wiring

I have 3 lamp posts in the back yard. I'd like to disconnect everything and get a multimeter, connect the 2 wires together at one end and figure out how to use the meter to see if I have conductivity down a run, pole to pole. It's wiring for 110. Can someone explain what I'm looking for in the meter and how to use it? Thanks.

From your description it sounds more like an open then a short. An open is a break in the wire. A short is two bare wires on oppisite legs touching. Clarify which it is and the circumstances leading up to your troubleshooting and we can better help you.

Just set on the lowest resiatance (ohm) scale. Touch the two probes together and the reading you see is continuity. That is the reading you are looking for when you test the cables by toutching the probes to the wires. .

I'd like to know what the different settings are on the OHM 20m, 200k, 20k, 2000, 200? I assume the 20m is the lowest, why would it matter? Just trying to edumacate the ole brain cells here. Thanks for the feed back.

Different ranges for diferent resistance. Not really that important for continuity. Especially on analog meters when measuring resistance you should pick a range that will put the expected resistance mid range. Less important on self ranging digital meters.

200 scale would be the lowest. The smaller the scale, the more sensitive the meter will be.
