Fluorescent Light Troubleshooting

I have a couple of 4' lights in my shop that I turn on in the morning and they come right on. After a while, the will just go off. After another while they will just come back on for a random ammount of time. The on and off us usually anywhere from an hour or so to a couple of hours. What causes this and can I fix it or just get new fixtures. That gets costly.

Could be a bad ballast overheating and tripping a thermal safety. Do the ballast look like there is tar running out? Are the ballasts too hot to touch when they trip?

I'll have to open them up and check. Is there a way to keep them from over heating?

Overheating means the ballasts are defective and need to be replaced. Sometimes it is almost as cheap to replace the fixture. If they are T-12 going to T-8 would be another reason. More light, less energy used.
