Ceiling fan smokes!

Hello,
Tenant called today to say the ceiling fan started smoking. Obviously the thing is shot. In the five years we lived there it was perfect. My question is, does running a ceiling fan non-stop for a month or two cause it to burn up? Wires got too hot from massive extended over use? Fan is at least ten years old. Thanks.

Bearings fail, fan seizes, windings over heat. Not unheard of for a fan that old. Running full time shouldn't cause it to overheat if the bearings are good.

10+ years on a fan that may not have been the most expensive fan in the store......EOL. I'd replace it before I would invest time in trying to fix it. I'd do it soon, too, since it is a rental.
