ceiling fan troubles

I am installing a new ceiling fan. My house was built on 2004. Out of the ceiling comes a red, black, white, and ground wire. The ceiling fan only has black and white. The direction say to connect black to black, white to white and ground to ground. I did this, cut the red even with the plastic coating and capped it off with a wire nut. I turned the power back on and the fan and light kit do nothing. Should I be connecting the red wire some where?

Welcome to the forums! Which wire is carrying current?? Red or black? With the power off, pull the switch and tell us the wiring there. The way the house was designed was to run 14-3 from the switch to the ceiling box. That way you could have the fan and the light controlled via separate switches. It is possible the red wire is hooked to the switch and is the current carrying conductor. Let us know.

If the fan only has a black and white, and there isn't a blue wire, and the fan has a light kit, the fan
must have a remote control. Which may be the issue.
