New light fixture wont operate
I am trying to install a new pendant light fitting but am having difficulty with the electrics.
When i wire the light to a plug and plug it into the wall the bulb lights up so the bulb and the light fixture itself are not faulty and when i check the wires in the ceiling with a meter the led lights up so the fixture appears to be working.
However, when i connect the lightto the ceiling - putting the black to black and white to white wires together, manually or via caps or clips, the bulb does not light up.
please help!

Welcome to the forums!
What wires do you have in the ceiling? Is there only one black, one white and one ground? When you say
i'm wondering what you're using to test it. Is it a tester that will show you the voltage that is present?
Just two more questions: What type of lamp (bulb) do you have in the fixture, and what type of switch is controlling the ceiling outlet?

Hi,
yes theres just black and white and ground wire in the ceiling although ground has been unused and would need some attention if i needed to ise it.
The tester im ising is commercial electric 110 / 220 vac / dc voltage tester. the 110 light glows when i connect both contacts. Pretty sure its not a non contact type.
110/220 VAC Voltage Tester-MS8900H at The Home Depot
For bulbs: originally i had an energy saving 13w / 120v bulb in there, (which worked when i plugged the whole thing into the wall).
today i replaced it with a standard bulb 60w 120v (which also worked in the wall but not the ceiling)
For the switch in the wall there's a dimmer switch with slider (and no switch) When i complete the circuit and the dimmer switch is in the off position the orange night light glows. It goes off when the circuit is incomplete. In the on position when the loght is wired in to the ceiling nothing happens - obviously.

Your tester is fine though the manufacturers seems clueless about the actual voltages in the US. They usually are 120v and 240v in homes. That however doesn't affect the result. It is fine for this purpose.
<assumes only two wires on switch> I would remove the switch temporally and connect the two wires on the switch together with a wire nut and try the light again.
If the switch has no neutral (only two wires on the switch) it is not compatible with a CFL bulb. That is though not your current problem but the switch could be bad thus the test above.
