LED light (MR16) good as reading light?

I'm looking to replace some incandescent light bulbs with more energy efficient ones; the problem is a lot of them are in recessed or enclosed fixtures, and my amateur googling tells me that I shouldn't be installing CFLs or LED bulbs in those. Is this correct? These are the types of fixtures I'm talking about: (glass enclosure, basically no room inside) What would be the best type of bulb for this fixtures? Only incandescent/halogen? I'm not planning on using anything brighter than a 60W equivalent.

I have viewed several other threads on this, but I have not seen a comparable box, so here goes..... Trying to install two ceiling fans in my town home. Outlets aren't readily accessible from the attic, so I have tried to poke around as much as I can without completely taking them out. Wiring is old. Conduit wrapped, so I assume the box is grounded via the conduit as there is no grounding wire. Both boxes look identical to the ceiling fan rated ones I have, but I am sure they were made well before any sort of etching/sticker indicating so was required. There is a bracket and some sort of center rod that the outlet was attached to. I can't tell if this rod runs and is fully secured to the joists, but I tried pulling down on it, and it seems pretty secure. I have attached several photos of the box. Do you think this box is appropriate for a fan? I have a couple fan mounting kits, but I would rather not take these boxes out if I don't have to. The wiring is a bit of a mess; and, like I said, it's going to be really difficult to access the boxes without really doing some significant work in the attic or ripping away part of the ceiling.
