Ceiling fan box higher than ceiling

Hello...

I'm installing a new ceiling fan, and I'm lucky enough to have dead-center of the room right underneath a joist. So, I picked up a 4 x 1/2" ceiling fan box. One problem: my house is 50+ years old and has two layers of 3/8" drywall on the ceiling, so the fan box isn't flush with the bottom of the ceiling - it's about 1/4" recessed into the ceiling.

Any advice on how to proceed? I'm a little afraid of shimming - doesn't seem strong enough. And I'd prefer to leave the location where it is as opposed to moving off center and putting in a 2x4 brace.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forums.

!/4" is not unacceptable. I would leave it as it is. Don't add shims and loose the mounting strength.

Also remember you do need a box, but it does not have to support the fixture. You can attach the fan hardware directly to the joist.

Thank you both. I like the idea of attaching the fan hardware directly to the joist - never thought of that!

In the pic below is the method I'll use to additionally mount the fan bracket. The two white holes are additional screws directly into the stud.

That's the method Hunter describes in their instructions, and the method I prefer to use. It's a really solid mount.

Note: a box is required to contain the splices regardless. The fan can be supported from the framing.
