Ceiling fan 3 speed switch

I just replaced the 3 speed switch in my ceiling fan because the chain broke in the fast/high postition. The switch is working fine in fast/high, medium, and slow but it doesn't have an off position. I put the wires in the new switch back the same way they were in the old switch, why doesn't it have an off position now?

Welcome to the forums.

You need a 3 speed 4 position switch. The 4th position is off. You got a 3 speed 3 position....no off.

Well, we have an unclear original post and an assumption.

What do you mean that it "does not have" an off position? Does one of the speeds repeat? It can be tricky replacing these switches because some motors are wound so that a 3-speed motor has only three wires - the two hot wires are powered at the same time for high speed.
