Pull-chain to Switch based lights

I have five pull-chain lights that I would like to convert to switch lights. Currently, they are all connected to each other by two nmb cables (see diagram below). I'm trying to figure out why they are connected by two cables instead of one. Both cables go to the fuse box from either end of the group of lights.

My end goal is to have 1 & 4 on one switch, 2&3 on another switch, and 5 on its own switch.

Can anyone explain why there are two wires connecting these lights to the box, and how this would affect setting them up on switches as described above?

Thanks!

What you have drawn is an old time ring circuit found only in older houses in the UK never in the U.S. yet you seem to be in Texas. What is the wiring at each light? Is the second cable connected?
