What is this?

I have a light in my basement that is making a humming noise and would like to replace it. However this light has a bunch of extra wires coming off it that I cannot identify. What is this kind of fixture called and what could the wires be for?

It takes 120V from the fixture box, and out the exposed side drops it down to a much lower voltage to run your doorbell.

Thanks for the info! Where would I find a replacement socket that has the bell transformer on it? I haven't been able to find anything similar at the big box stores.

The bell transformer mounts to any junction box with a 1/2" knockout. So in your picture.... the transformer is one part, the 4" round metal box is a second part and the 4" keyless porcelain fixture is a third part.

If it's the humming that's the problem then you pick up a 16v 10 or 15va bell transformer. They are available at any electrical supply house or home improvement center.

The specs are right on the transformer.
