New ceiling j-box older home/insulation
Hello,
My house was built in 1955. I need to install a ceiling mounted light with a pull switch in a pantry.
All the existing ceiling boxes are wired from the above alcove. There is about 2 feet of the older, clothy insulation in the attic area.
I need to shimmy into the area and mount a j-box for this light. Wiring is not a problem as there is a j-box to feed off of very close and I am familiar with what is on this circuit.
Should I just clear the insulation away and use a ceiling fan brace bar that goes between the joists to hang this j-box?
If I do that, can I just put the insulation back over the box? Is there an IC rated j-box?
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks
Tripper

You can use a 4" bar box and when finished you can cover it with insulation.
You can also use an old work 4" round plastic box if it's just the pull chain fixture.

J-boxes do not need to be IC rated. Insulation can be put over them with no issues.
You do not need a fan brace unless you are installing a fan, or a very heavy fixture. Most cases a round remodel box will work just fine and will save you from swimming in insulation.

You could use an old work box from below. No hanger needed. No need to remove the insulation. However the big problem may be that J-box. If the wiring is not grounded it can't be extended.
