installing recessed lighting with attic access

Hello,
I'm putting in some recessed lighting in my kitchen and dining area. For the dining area, the ceiling has been removed and I can use some recessed lighting cans. For the kitchen, I still have drywall/sheetrock in place but I also have access to the attic above. Lighting cans I've seen appear to have a tab on the mounting rail that goes between the sheetrock and the joist. So I'm not sure if I can fit a lighting can from above. For the kitchen should I just install the lights using retrofit cans?

thanks

Welcome to the forums.

You can use new work cans. The tabs can be slid between the sheetrock and the beams, if not, fold them over and then nail or screw them to the beam.
