Pancake box with metal post in center

I recently moved into a new house. I removed an old dome light fixture, and wanted to hang a new one. I removed the old fixture, and this is what I saw.

There is a metal nub hanging down from the center, that I can't remove. Because of this, I cannot attach the mounting bracket that came with the new light.

Is ther anyway to work around this, other than tearing out the box and installing a new one. There is not attic access, this is on the first floor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Sure that's not a pipe plug in the center? As old as that is there's a possibility it could have been a gas light at one time.

I think you may be right. If that is the case, should I install a new box, or try to work around, or see if I can remover the plug?

Looking at a cleaned up version of your picture I don't see a plug, just some kind of odd box mounting but those wires do not look usable.

There was a light hooked up before that worked fine with no issue. There is a lot of fraying from the cover though. The center part of the picture (i know it's hard to tell) is where this metal part is. It sticks down about 2in making me unable to attach anything to it. The box is braced in there & extremely sturdy. I think it was put in when the house was built.

Does your new light have a canopy cover on it? You could try extending the box.
