12/3 wire

when is 12/ 3 wire used
i am wireing up 10 can lites in my basement will this wire work for this

Welcome to the forums.

!2-3 is normally used for running a multi wire branch circuit or for a three way switch circuit.

You can use it to wire the recessed lights but you really only need two conductors and usually # 14 is plenty heavy enough. It will be a little tough to get two 12-3's in a box and make connections. You could use the white, black and ground and cap off the red wire.

Usually it can carry 20 amps. You need to total up the number of cans and the total wattage of the lights used. We can then tell you the approximate total. amps needed. 12-3 may be overkill - nothing wrong except it is more expensive and may have more capacity than you will need.
