Question dimmer switch replacement for halogen desklamp

Hello;
I want to replace a rotary dimmer/on-off switch on a 12v-AC halogen desk lamp, in which there is no longer an "off" setting (dimmer works, but light goes back on when switch clicked to "off" position).
In the lamp base, there is a 120v to 12v transformer box, and a separate switch with two blue wires which connect to the transformer.

Do I need to know whether the switch is rated for 12 vac or 120 vac before I buy a replacement, or will any similar switch work?
I hope no other info is necessary for someone to provide an answer.

Yes, you need to know voltage. Is the dimmer on the secondary of the transformer (hint look where the lamp's cord connects).
