Recessed lighting on then off then on, ect...

So we have lived in the house for about 5 years and last night the recessed lighting downstairs, 4 recessed lights, decided to start cycling from on to off continually. Plan to go to Lowes as well, but wanted to get any ideas from the group of experts. Thanks.

Welcome to the forums.

Not a common problem. Sometimes the thermal protection switch will trip in a can due to high heat but all four wouldn't blink at the same time.

Are there just those four lights on a switch or dimmer ?
If yes... then possibly a bad switch or dimmer.

What bulbs are in those lights? Certain bulbs can't be on a dimmer. Was one of the bulbs replaced recently?

Recessed lighting

Thanks for the responses. Yes it is a dimmer, the switch also controls a fan and that is working fine. Bulbs have not been replaced recently. Probably an hour or two prior to them starting to cycle on and off, I had heard a noise that seemed to be coming from the one light, maybe that one has a bad switch?

I don't think that a fan is supposed to have a dimmer switch.

The heat safety switch only controls the can it's installed in. Possibly you heard the sound of a loose connection ?
