Ceiling fan mounted to electrical box mounted to furring strips?
Hi,
We have an old house (1900 or so) and I've been installing ceiling fans in all the bedrooms. All have been plaster and lath, which is a separate saga, but one room has a drywall ceiling mounted on 1x3 furring strips across the joists.
The current fixture centered in the room has an electrical box which is attached to the furring strip with wood screws. Is it okay to install a fan on this electrical box? It seems solid.
Thanks in advance!
Mike

Welcome to the forums.
A fan rated box has larger mounting screws, usually 10-24, for the fan base.
I'm not quite sure what to say about the furring strip as you don't know how well it was fastened to the beams originally.

Thanks for the quick replies. So is the this the proper way?
1. Remove existing box.
2. Cut the section of furring strip directly above the box.
3. Mount a fan brace bar or 2x4 between the joists such that the box will end up flush with the ceiling.
4. Mount a fan rated box to the brace bar or 2x4.
Thanks again,
Mike
