HELP!! Please, Ceiling light and fan wiring troubles

Only three wires come from the ceiling, creamy, brownish red and copper, when removing old light fixture the black from the light was connected to the creamy, white to the brownish red, and the copper was grounded with bare wire. I assumed I would follow as if the brownish were white and the cream were black, but once all installed, nothing turns on?

Do you have any means to test for voltage? Even a simple neon tester would work.

The fixture sounds like it was wired backwards, but that would not stop it from working.

If you are mounting a ceiling fan in place of a light fixture, make sure the box is "fan rated". Should be stamped into the metal or molded into the plastic. You can also tell by the larger screws used to hold the fixture.
