Old electric box won't fit new ceiling fan mounting bracket.

Took old fan down and new fan mounting bracket is about a quarter to a half inch too wide for the box. Electric box screw hole to screw hole is 2.75 inches. New bracket has to have screws be at least a little more than 3 inches apart.

This box held a fan that is about the same size for 20 years without any stability issues.

So, are there any adapters that can make it wider, or do I have to install an older model fan or a completely new electric box?

Any help would be mucho appreciated.

It is unlikely the old box is fan rated so best course of action is to replace it with a fan rated box. You probably have an old 3" box with ears that take 8-32 screws. You need a fan rated 4" box that has posts for 10-24 machine screws. No safe way to jerry rig it.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have attached a picture of the box. Can you tell if replacing it has to be done from the attic or not. I'd prefer not to go up there.

That is not a fan rated box and will need to be replaced.

This is want you need: Westinghouse 15.5 cu. in. Retrofit Ceiling Fan Saf-T-Brace-0110000 at The Home Depot You should not need to go in the attic.

You have conduit coming into the box so you will probably need access from above to change it out.

A little update and a few more questions.

I cut around the box a little bit and removed this extension piece.Name: IMG_0087.jpg

And here is what I am left with.

It is firmly attached to a bar going between the studs and has a couple of nails into a stud as seen on the right side of the pic.

The question remains, does this still need to be replaced with a newer fan rated box or is there is some kind of extension that can make up the 5/8 of an inch that the not wide enough round adapter used to inhabit?

Is that piped in or is it flex? If it is flex remove that box and use it as a junction box in the attic ,install a fan rated box in it's place and run a new cable between it and the junction box.
