Dimmer Light Switch dilemna

Replaced wall switch in dining room with dimmer switch. The dimmer switch works perfectly. Lights will only turn off if on dim and on off switch pressed several times. Any Help appreciated.

May be a bad dimmer even if new. Try a different brand.

Does the switch work without the cover plate on? Switch may be set too far back into the box for the push switch mechanism to fully engage.
