same color wires!?

Hi,

I live in an old house and went to change out my ceiling fan for a single light bulb light fixture. Once I got the fan off I noticed there are only 3 wires (all same gauge) that are all the same color. I have no idea which one I need to attach to the different color wires on my light fixture.

the light fixture i have only has 3 wires: black (hot), white (neutral), bare (ground).

I attempted to figure out which was which with my multimeter but I am not sure I succeeded since the light fixture stays on when the circuit breaker is switched back on.

here are 2 slightly different pictures of the socket

any black you see at the ends of those wires is residue from the electrical tape I removed.

What is the wiring at the switch? Were any of the house wires at the light previously connected together?

the light fixture i have only has 3 wires: Black (hot),
hook to the single wire.

white (neutral),
hook to the two wires twisted together
remove the twisted pair from the small center hole of the strap.

bare (ground).
you have no ground...cut it off or wirenut it.

You are going to need the hole in the center of the bracket for the mounting stud.
