Trying to figure out lighting configuration for stairway down to basement

I am finishing my basement and need some better lighting for my stairway downstairs. In the basement I am using 5" LED recessed lights so my thought was to just add 2 or 3 of those centered in the ceiling of my stairway. The problem is my joist runs exactly down the center of the stairway, so centering some cans up there is not possible. I am trying to figure out what I should do. Still use 5" LEDs and have them on each side of the joist staggered (option #1). Does that look dumb? Go with 3" or 4" LEDs and put them on each side of the joist? If I do that, do I space them evenly (option #2) or stagger them (option #3)?

Any other option which might work?

The width of the stairway is 38" and the depth is 10'

If you're worried about looks, option 2 looks the best. I imagine all options would provide sufficient lighting.

If I go with option 2, do you think 4 lights would be enough? Or should I do 6 lights?

If the width of my staircase is 38" wide, should I just space them evenly (12.5" off the wall). Or do I put them closer to the center?

Same with the depth... do I space them 3'4" off the wall front and back wall?

I don't see why you would need 6 lights. Then again some of those newer style bulbs are worthless IMO. Have you considered a one 4' florescent fixture that bolts to the ceiling?

"some of those newer style bulbs are worthless IMO"

How can I tell which ones are good? Is there a certain brand or model you recommend?

Option 2 looks good. 12.5" looks balanced. 4 can lights will put out more than enough light.

LED can lights put out quite a bit of light. 6 lights would be too many in my opinion.

I'd be glad the joists are running long direction, it makes your job a lot easier.

The 4" LED's I got are from Menards and are Lithonia Lighting brand. Are those ok?

LEDs and CFLs are fine as long and you look at the info on the package. LEDs are better all around except for cost. Just be sure to get the equivalent wattage as you would for an incandescent, or better yet, look at the lumen output to compare apples to apples.

Lastly look at the color of the lamps. Most homes look best 3500K or less. 2700K is about the color of an incandescent.

That's what seemed to bother me. If the package said that a 40W LED was as good as a 60W incandescent, it didn't seem to give as much light.
