Extra red wire in light switch box

Hi, I was installing a ceiling fan with a switch for the light and one for the fan. When I got everything all back together the fan worked but the light wouldn't work. So I took the switch out and saw it had two red wires connected together with a black wire connecting them to the switch. I took the reds apart and just hooked the one from the fan directly to the switch and it worked fine. Does anyone know what this extra red wire could be? It doesn't seem to have affected anything, but I don't know what it could be for.

Welcome to the forums!

When you sere installing the fan, do you remember what wires were in the box? There might be two switch legs to run the fan and light separate.

Yes, there was a black, white, red, and the ground. Everything up there was normal. But when I got it all hooked up the fan switch worked fine but the light switch did not. That's when I discovered the extra red wire tied in with the red wire coming from the fan which caused the switch to not work.
