Adding exterior garage lights

Hello all. I'm new to this site and I just bought my first home recently, and as expected, my DIY list has begun.
Currently, I only have one exterior light by my front door and no lights on the sides of my garage door. Can anyone point me towards a "How-To", or share any tips/advice on how I can do this? While I have a basic knowledge, and a little experience with electrical work(i.e. Replacing existing outlets, light fixtures and ceiling fans), I haven't done anything that involved connecting additional wiring to existing items. Thank you for your input.....

 

Is the garage attached or detached?
If detached does it have electric.
If detached would you want the lights controlled by a switch in the house or just the garage or both?
Attached or detached would you want motion or photocell or timer controlled lights.

 

Is the garage finished? (Drywall on the walls)
Is there a panel in the garage?

 

Oops, I guess I should have provided a little more info...
It's attached, and semi-finished. Drywall everywhere except the rafters. There's a switch inside the front door to control the porch light, but that's where I'm stuck. I'm not sure how to add 2 new exterior lights on each side of the garage and have them wired/controlled by the porch light switch.

 

Rafters? You mean ceiling joist?
Has the drywall on the walls been taped and mudded, or is it just hung?
Need to figure is the power is run to the porch light or to the switch first.
No one here can see where that porch is in relationship to the garage, or see how the wiring is going to get from the porch to the garage.
